hi elaine, i was diagnosed with graves 9mos ago based on my symptoms and TSH, FT3 and FT4 levels only i was not given anti bodies test endo said no need for that and said that i have graves. i had a thyroid ultrasound too and found nodules but endo said that no need to do fna as they were very small..for the past 3 months my levels were normal but i'm still having symptoms like palpitations, brain fog, weakness and anxiety..my question is how to know if nodules is causing all these hyperT symptoms and its not really graves as i haven't undergone antibody test? and what to do if nodules is the culprit? what treatment do i need to under take? thank you so much for helping i really appreciate that you spend time with us....
thank you, amy
im taking 60mg tapazole on the onset of graves and slowly decreasing dosage as numbers stabilize now i'm taking 2.5mg ( i split the 5mg) for the past 1 and half months now but still feel palpitations and anxiety recent numbers were TSH .91 (ref range .27-3.3) FT3 5.8 (ref range 4.2-12) FT4 20.1 (ref range 8.8-33) taken last Jan 24, 2012....

Hi,
I'd find a new doctor if that's possible. You could easily have toxic multinodular goiter rather than Graves' disease. Without tests for thryoid antibodies, there's no way to know if you have Graves' disease. In both conditions, the gland can be enlarged.
Anti-thyroid drugs work for either condition but my concern is that the recommended starting dose for Tapazole is 20 mg. It used to be 30 mg but studies showed that patients were far less likely to develop side effects on a 20 mg dose and that there were no benefits from a higher dose. Your FT3 level is probably too low for you and may be causing the palpitations and anxiety (these can occur in hypoT). Usually, TSH stays very low, often <.01, unless you're near remission in GD or your ATD dose is too high. Your FT4 is ok but it could be higher. Why don't you ask about lowering your ATD dose?
best, Elaine
