Hi Elaine, hope you're doing well. On June 1st I went to the dr for a physical and told him how I'd been feeling -- extremely tired, very hot, bad tremors, could barely walk a block without feeling like I would pass out. These symptoms had been going on for awhile but had gotten much worse in the past weeks/months. He immediately suspected Grave's since my grandfather also had the disease. When they did bloodwork, it showed the following: T3 = over 2,000 (did not give exact amount), T4 = 6.2, and I do not have the TSH number in front of me. I immediately got an appointment with an endo b/c they felt these numbers were very high. The endo prescribed Tapazole and about 1 week into treatment, I developed bad hives. They put me on prednisone which eliminated the hives and then tried the Tapazole again. When the hives returned, the endo felt I was allergic to the medicine and I begged for a prescription for PTU just to try it. I started PTU on July 6th (taking 100 mg 3 times a day) and had bloodwork on July 12th. My bloodwork on the 12th was as follows: T3 = 763, T4 = 2.2, and TSH of 0.01. My endo called with this information yesterday and felt good that my numbers were improving on the PTU. However, yesterday the hives started returning (they had been there all along but only a few here and there and now are much worse). I am hesitant to tell him this because he has been pushing me to do RAI from the beginning and I am more than skeptical of this approach. Is it possible that I am not allergic to the meds and it's a symptom of the disease? I have read where this has happened to several ppl, and I hate to go off the medicine if I am not allergic. I am very eager to feel better and would try anything at this point, even staying on the PTU with the hives if it would help. I had fish 2 days in a row -- would this have something to do with it? I eat very healthy, but am curious as to whether a gluten-free diet would help at all. My next endo appointment is August 2nd. Thank you for your site and your help to all of us.

Hi Ashley,

We are prone to hives and often they're triggered by foods, low vitamin A levels, and stress. Reducing the dose generally helps and with your FT4 almost in range, your doctor might agree to lowering your dose. A gluten free diet may help and avoiding processed foods can help as well. Some doctors don't consider hives more than an inconvenience and prescribe Bendadryl (diphenhydramine available otc) or hydroxyzine. But lowering the dose is often the best solution. Best, Elaine
