Hi Debbie,
When the active phase of GO resolves, symptoms of blurred vision and proptosis generally resolve. Light sensitivity or photosensitivity, on the other hand, can sometimes persist in Graves' disease although improvement may be seen. I've had it since childhood and would not be able to drive without dark glasses. Orbital decompression surgery, which is not recommended during the active phase of GO, is unlikely to help it.
You'd want to see an ophthalmologist who specializes in thyroid eye disease if there's one in your area. Usually, no treatment is needed although steroids are used if proptosis is severe or if vision is threatened. You probably noticed too that symptoms of eye disease tend to wax and wane and usually worsen in times of stress. Diet can also make a difference with salty foods increasing fluid retention. Flaxseed oil is an excellent treatment for dryness.
Best, Elaine
