Dear Elaine,

Thanks for your advice. As you mentioned, i am also particularly interested in trying bugleweed as there are many studies saying this is good for grave disease. There is one product name called Thyroid II from Wisewomanherbals. Have you heard of this? I list the ingredient below:

Thyroid II Ingredients: Fresh Lycopus (bugleweed) Fresh Leonurus (motherwort) Fresh Melisa (lemon balm) Fresh Passiflora (passion flower) Fresh Selenicereus (cactus) Lavender essential oil.

Does this Thyroid II act as an antithyroid medicine? I am not sure whether to stop my ATD and try this herbal remedy. If this herbal can decrease my TSI antibody, i think it is worth trying. However i do not want to end up hypo if i take my both together (ATD and herbal). What is your opinion?

Hi Eeli,

Thyroid II is a good product and works well. In general, herbal tonics are milder acting. For people starting out, it's often good to start with ATDs and once levels are in range, switch to herbal meds, especially if you're being controlled with a low dose of ATDs. For someone on a low ATD dose, like 2.5 mg mmi or less, it would be better to just take either the ATD or the herbal tonic. At higher ATD doses, you'd want to cut the dose by 2.5--5 mg and add the herbal meds.

However, herbal meds haven't been well studied in pregnancy so if you're planning on becoming pregnant you might want to stick with the ATDs to stay consistent. Best, Elaine
