Hello Elaine, thank you for your wisdom! I was diagnosed with Grave's in December of 2009-i lost from 144 pounds down to 124 pounds in about 2 months. My values at diagnosis were TSH >006, T46.1, T3 17.93. One sister has hashimotos, other sister ITP, and my mom has rheumatoid arthritis. I was started on Methimazole 30 mg daily and after 2 months dose was dropped down to 10 mg daily. My weight is back up to 138 pounds. I was diagnosed with grave's opthalmology and am being treated for that. My most recent levels: TSH <.011, T4 1.4, T3 3.65. My doctor says to stay on my current Methimazole 10 mg daily, BUT, i do not feel myself. I have no energy to do anything but get to work. I am walking for 1/2 hour in the morning, but it takes all i have to do this. I wasn't tired like this before! Are my levels too low, even though they are right there in the middle? i felt like he should have tried me on 5 mg of Methimazole. What are your thoughts?

Hi Linda,
The ATD should be lowered over time. Starting at 30 mg was ok and so was dropping your dose to 10 mg, but it probably is time for a reduction based on your symptoms. Ideally, you'd be on the lowest ATD dose needed to bring FT4 to at least mid-range and preferably near the higher end of the range. You might ask your doctor about reducing your dose to 7.5 mg based on fatigue. Some doctors hesitate to lower the dose if you mention weight gain, but they listen to concerns about other symptoms. Other common hypo symptoms include depression, constipation, fatigue, joint pain, hearing loss, mental fog, and more. Best, Elaine
