Hi Elaine,

I have a query about my meds again. I was diagnosed with Graves Disease about 2-months ago. My doctor put me on to 20 mg of Carbimazole a day and now I've dropped back to 10 mg a day.

The thing is my feet and hands are freezing, my skin and hair is oily and I'm getting pimples for the first time in years on my face. I have to admit I stopped my contraceptive pill about 3-months ago but I'm not sure if that's what's effecting my skin? The rest of the skin on my body is dry, but my head is oily... Weird!

My poor left eye is blood shot and sore most days. I also wake up with dry eyes and it continues all day. What on earth is going on with me?

I know I have to get tested to see where my levels are at? However I only changed to this dosage a little over a week ago so it's to early to know. What would you recommend? Should I change my dose? Something just doesn't feel right.

My last bloods were just below normal btw.

Hi Lisa,

You were probably on the 20 mg dose a bit too long and began developing symptoms of hypothyroidism. Your dose should be based on your FT4 level. Patients start on a higher starting dose and as soon as FT4 falls into range (usually around 6 weeks) the dose is reduced. Sometimes it's less of a strain on the body to reduce gradually like moving to 15 mg for a few days and then to 10 mg. 10 mg is a good choice because the usual maintenance dose for mmi after the first 6-8 weeks is 2.5--10 mg daily. I think you've had hypo symptoms and now you're having some symptoms related to the change in levels from hyper to hypo to improved. Thyroid hormone is very potent so even slight changes will cause some big changes. Probably your scalp's oil production fell when you were hypot and then increased as you lowered your dose and your thyroid hormone levels began to rise. I think once you're on 10 mg a while longer you'll feel better although maybe not your best if the mmi dose is still a bit too high. Best, Elaine
