Grave disease and pregnancy

Hello Elaine,

I have been suffering from grave disease from last 2 years. I was on Tapezole (10 mg) untill 4 months ago. My levels came to normal(TSH - 1.53/ T4 - 1.3/ T3 - 97) but as I wanted to get pregnant my doctor switched me to PTU (50 mg once a day).

I got my blood work report today from my doctor, following are the readings:

TSH - 0.03

T4 - 1.3

My doctor changed my dose of PTU to 50 mg 5 tablets a day which I think is to much. Is this dosage amount is right for me?

My T4 is within the range but TSH is very low, is it worth trying to get pregnant with this low TSH? and what are the chances of getting pregnant with low TSH but normal T4?

Thank you so much for your help!

Tulsi

Re: Grave disease and pregnancy

Hi Tulsi,

Your PTU dose should be based on your FT4 level. A low TSH is expected in Graves' disease and doesn't mean that you're hyperthyroid. The thyroid antibodies in Graves' disease falsely decrease this result.  Increasing your PTU dose would cause your FT4 level to fall too low. Hypothyroidism needs to be avoided if you're planning to become pregnant since it can impair fertility and cause many developmental problems during pregnancy.

Best, Elaine
