new endo visit

Hi Elaine!
I have been patiently waiting for this appointment and it was worth it! I had all my lab results from day 1 with me, articles I researched, your advice to me and articles you wrote,(she's heard of you) so I was ready..she looked over all of them, asked me questions and seems to think I have Hashitoxicosis. I have both Graves and Hashi's.  I have high anti tpo's and anti tg's and tsi (as of Oct.08) She said it all depends what antibody is dominant at the time. This is what I have been thinking for a long time. I've never been the "classic" Graves patient as I went hypo on 2.5 from the beginning and showed a tsh after 3 weeks on meds, not a swollen thyroid and no eye involvement. The only thing I didn't have is the uptake scan which at the time my last endo said was normal.I think it was high normal though. She's getting a fax from the hospital where I had it done. If it shows any evidence of a Hashi's thyroid, she'll order a thyroid ultrasound to check for nodules which can develop over time even though none showed up on the uptake but that was 3 years ago. She felt none but said it felt Hashi like. I am just very auto immune, I guess. She said I caught the hyper part early and that was good.
She also told me I can stay on anti thyroid meds if I need them, indefinitely, they won't hurt me and she's had patients on them for 10 years. Also she might consider block and replace if I need that too, altough she only has 5 percent of patients on that treatment. She says RAI just makes you hypo and you need meds anyway, indefinitely. She believes in remission (of course! she said) and I felt real good about the visit, not full of anxiety like I was with the previous endo.
She was also very pleased with my knowledge and thought it was great I knew so much. She says she has patients that come in that think they have a high thyroid level when it's low. I told her I think you should be proactive in your own disease and she agreed. She also said that she doesn't just go by labs but by how the patient feels also. She also asked me if I remember when I started to feel hyper, did something happen? I told her the week after my Mom moved in I had symptoms. She told me stress was my trigger. I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders as now I have someone who will listen, who is compassionate, not old fashioned in their thinking and will do everything to help me get well again.I'm staying on the 1.25 dose till I go get more labs next week, I still have joint pain and have become really forgetful. She said that is the high antibodies doing that. She is testing the TBII which I never had done. Also my vitamin D level along with the FT3 and 4 and tsh. Cortisol was also on the lab list. I will see her again in 2 weeks to see what's what and to decide what to do next. She was worth the wait! Thankyou Elaine for all your help,I learned most of what I know about auto immune thyroid disease from you.Now I have a doctor who will work with me too!

                                                               Sincerely, Bransnana

Re: new endo visit

Hi Brans,

Wow, it sounds like you have a great doctor, and it's worderful that you're so knowledgeable that you could communicate easily with her. If you get a chance you might want to add her to Mary's list of patient referred doctors on about.com. She sounds perfect.

Best, Elaine
