Hi Elaine, I was diagnosed with graves disease in Nov 2007, was sent to E.R with levels at : tsh-0.01, free t4 - 5.6, t3 - 533, was ref by pcp to endo who put me on a high dose of ptu from dec - april 2008, I responded well to the ptu so well my tsh skyrocketed to 4.98, at this point I felt like crap had gained about 20 pounds , and by the way he was pressuring me to take rai which I refused after doing research and using common sense if the meds are working why destroy my thyroid, to make a long story short I changed endos he gradually took me off the ptu and today i'm not on any meds, however I still have hypo symptoms such as not sleeping well, my eyes slightly protrude in the mornings and gradually go back to normall about an hour after wake up , my face is puffy in the mornings , heart palpitations , and the most annoying problem is the abdominal bloating, I take a natural diuretic( dandelion root pills) that helps somewhat but if I dont take it for a few days I look like I'm 5 months pregnant to the point where i cant fit my clothes because of my abdomin, I went to my last check up 03/23/09, my levels at that time were, tsh -2.09, free t4 1.1 Do you think I have subclinical hypothyroidism and if so should it be treated with a low dose of synthoid or armour thyroid ?
Thanks, Shani

Hi Shani,
Do you know if you were ever tested for thyroid antibodies to confirm that you had Graves' disease? It could be that you had thyroiditis, a condition that causes a period of hyperthyroidism lasting for a few months that's followed by a similar period of hypothryoidism. Sometimes, the hypothyroidism can be permanent.
About 20% of people with Graves' disease also move into mild hypothyroidism. Like the hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism following Graves' disease can also be transient.
Studies show that peole with thyroid antibodies who have TSH levels higher than 2.0 are moving into hypothyroidism. And for many people a FT4 of 1.1 would be too low for the body's needs. You might want to find a doctor knowledgeable in Wilson's syndrome, who understands that lab results need to be correlated with symtoms.
The abdominal bloating your mention can also occur in gluten sensitivity. You might want to have tests for gluten sensitivity or you could try eliminating wheat, rye and barley from your diet and see if you notice a difference. People with autoimmune thyroid disease and gluten sensitivity who follow a gluten free diet generally see improvement in both conditions. Best, Elaine
