Welcome to The Q&A with Elaine Moore. Registered members are invited to ask any question of Elaine Moore on autoimmune diseases, Graves' disease, other thyroid diseases and subconditions, laboratory work, traditional and complementary medicine, triggers and environmental influences, thyroid and immune disorders in pets and animals, and other relevant areas of inquiry.

Latest result

Dear Elaine,

I just got my latest result back again after 3 weeks from the last test. Would like to get your opinion on this:

April 2, 2009

TSH : 0.06 ( 0.3-5.1)

FT4 : 15.6 ( 11.5-22.7)

FT3 : 3.6 ( 3.5-6.5)

Comparing that with my two previous results :

Feb 11

TSH : 0.05 FT4 : 18.9 FT3: 3.9

March 12

TSH:0.07 FT4: 17.8 FT3: 3.7

I have been taking around 1 to 1.25 mg of carbimazole daily since late November of last year. What do you think of the result? Seems like my TSH hasn't moved much but the FT4 has gone down a bit and FT3 still in the lower end of the range...do you think the dosage should be cut into a more smaller pieces? Hi Ling,

TSH often stays suppressed or low for some time even after patients move into remission. What's good is that your TSH is eventually staying the same. I suspect you probably have blocking TSH receptor antibodies that are keeping TSH low.

A dose less than 1.25 mg carbimazole really does involve pill crumbs. Why don't you try taking 1.25 mg carbimazole every other day. I think you're nearing remission and it's just going to take longer for TSH to rise. This will keep your FT3 from falling below the reference range and help boost FT4 a bit. Best, Elaine
