Hi Elaine,

First of all, I am very sorry to hear about your recent loss. I hope that each day is a little easier than the last.

I almost 36 years old and was diagnosed with GD in Dec 2009 and at the moment all levels (TSH, fT3 and fT4) are stable on 100mg of PTU per day. My GD antibodies are at 1.2 (should be <1.0)

I fell pregnant in April, but unfortunately suffered a miscarriage at 10 weeks (it was a missed miscarriage -- baby stopped growing at 8 weeks)

My endocrinologist says that the GD shouldn't have affected the pregnancy as I was being monitored every four weeks and my levels remained stable -- I was even able to drop to 50mg per day of PTU.

I have been doing some reading about miscarriages, and have read that one reason for recurrent miscarriage is APS. Is there a link between APS and GD? If I have GD, am I more likely to also have APS?

The doctors have said that miscarriages are unfortunately quite common (which I have come to learn after talking to people) and have put mine down to bad luck. But I am afraid that there might be a link between the GD and APS that they haven't picked up.

I am planning to visit my general practioner and ask for the blood tests for APS. Do you have any thoughts about this?

Thanks for all you do,
Bonnie

Hi Bonnie,

Thanks for your condolences and I'd like to offer mine too for your miscarriage.

It's true that APS is the leading cause of recurrent miscarriages and also strokes in young women. People with one autoimmune disease are at higher risk for developing a second autoimmune disease so it's a good idea to be tested. Ask your doctor to run a hypercoagulation profile so you have all the tests that might be involved in this syndrome. If he won't run all, at least get tested for antiphospholipid and anticardiolipin antibodies. While these are rare disorders and miscarriages are common, they're easy to treat and the reassurance of a negative result can also offer benefits.

best, elaine
