Dosing

Hello Elaine,

I had written you and said that I felt like I was having hypo symptoms and taking 1.25mg tapazole every other day.

You said that the low dose of tapazole wouldn't be having much of an affect, can I as more about what you meant by that? Do you mean it is to low, to put me into a hypo state? Or that it is so low, it wouldn't be doing anything at all...is it basically as though I haven't been taking meds?

You had also mentioned that I could spontaneously have moved into hypothyroidism? How would this have happened?

I am seeing an integrative doc who seems to think I've had hashimotos the whole time. I've just had new labs drawn so we'll see...

Hi Monica,

A dose of 1.25 mg can cause effects but they'd be very mild in terms of reducing thyroid hormone levels. This dose can help reduce antibody production by very mildly suppressing your immune system, but in terms of thyroid hormone production, you'd be reducing your FT4 by about 0.1 mg/dl. This would not be enough to cause hypothyroidism.

About 20% of people with Graves' disease spontaneously move into hypothryoidism. If you've been reading the posts here you'll see that their are several regular posters who have experienced this. This occurs when you begin producing more blocking than stimulating TSH receptor antibodies. Typically, hypothyroidism in this situation is mild and it can resolve on its own, but while it's present it usually requires treatment. It's also possible that you were in a hyperthyroid phase of Hashimoto's or a transitional phase like Hashitoxicosis and are now moving into overt hypothryoidism. best, elaine
