Dear Elaine,
Checking in with my new labs (diagnosed with graves in sept 2009)and as always I need your advice about medication. On April 16, I was taking 2.5 mg of methimazole on Mon, Wed , Fri only and my lab results were - T-4 Free .8 (range .8-1.8) , T-3 Total 102.8 (range 87.0 -216.0) , TSH .38 (range .35-5.5). I continued on this dose and my new labs on June 18 are T-4 Free 1.0 , T-3 Total 106.6, TSH .14. My new endo thinks I should add Tue and Thurs but so far I have not done that and even when I take the 2.5 on Mon Wed Fri I feel very tired and my hands hurt. What do you think? I want to lower the dose not increase it. I hate feeling tired all the time, too much to do! I do not want to go hypo again as I have in the past but I do not want to get hyper either. I did have a little more stress between April and June , but I have gotten that under control. I really want to beat this thing altogether! I have been being as careful as I can with my gluten free / dairy free diet. I did try Quinoa products as you suggested and I really like the pasta products with Quinoa and corn instead of brown rice. I also want you to know that if you really need a comfort food try Pamelas pancake mix! Let me know what you think about my dosage, thank you - Sam
PS Wanted to let you know that I had to increase my cat Olivers dosage a little and I think the reason is that I wa giving one of my other cats Tuna because he was not feeling well and of course Oliver would get into it. You had said that mercury might be a cause of hyperthyroid in cats and I wonder if the Tuna has mercury levels that might affect him. Let me know what you think about that or if there might be another cause for him to get hyper again. Thanks so much!

Hi Sam,
Looking at your labs, your dose should be decreased not increased. Probably your doctor is confused by the low TSH. However, the recommendation is to base the dose on the FT4 level, using the lowest dose needed to keep FT4 at least at mid-range.
Thanks for the gluten-free info. I ordered some buckwheat cereal today since I couldn't find buckwheat pancake mix. Buckwheat is actually a fruit and a good replacment for wheat.
Cats are so small that the amount of mercury in tuna, which doesn't usually bother us unless we eat a lot, would be enough to cause feline problems. I think you solved that mystery. best, elaine
