HI Elaine,
I would like to check with you if low vitamin D is link to gum bleeding. Ever since i was diagnosed with grave disease, my gum bleed easily even without brushing it.
I just found out that my vitamin D is low and doctor told me to take 2000 IU vitamin D. Do i need to have further test to check for other vitamin/mineral difficiency? What mineral is commonly low in grave disease?
Another question is about iodine. I am trying to limit my iodine intake but i realised that commercial bread contain high iodine, even as high as 150mcg per slice. I purchase Pepperidge farm whole grain bread. One of the ingredient listed is dough conditioner which i suspect contain iodine. Is there any brand that you can recommend for us which is safer to consume?

Hi,
Be sure your doctor rechecks your vitamin D level after you've been on 2000 IU for 8 weeks. Taking 3000 IU, my level was still low. Vitamin D intereferes with calcium absorption and this can indirectly lead to bleeding gums. Vitamin C and CoQ10 can both help. Because hyperthyroidism causes us to not absorb oil soluble vitamins well, it's good to take a multivitamin without iodine and extra CoQ10. Other than vitamin D, most nutrients aren't tested for individually. I take extra vitamin A, K, E, B complex and C in addition to 5000 IU of vitamin D and a multivitamin.
Since I have gluten sensitivity I don't buy bread and hadn't realized it contained that much iodine. I think you'll have to look at labels in the store to find one low in iodine. It's good you caught this. Best, Elaine
