Welcome to The Q&A with Elaine Moore. Registered members are invited to ask any question of Elaine Moore on autoimmune diseases, Graves' disease, other thyroid diseases and subconditions, laboratory work, traditional and complementary medicine, triggers and environmental influences, thyroid and immune disorders in pets and animals, and other relevant areas of inquiry.

Gastro Oesophageal Reflux Disease

Hi Elaine,

Thanks for a fabulous site.

To recap I am 39 years old, have had hyperthyroidism Graves Disease, am very fit + living very healthly and have now been in remission since 3 December 2009.

What I would like to know is if any other Graves Disease patients who are in remission also suffer from spastic colon and or gastro oesophageal reflux once in remission.

I never had any real medical complaints but since being diagnosed with Graves Disease it seems there is always something wrong with me.

Hi Claudia,

It's not common for people in remission from Graves' to have gastrointestinal complaints. However, we have a higher risk for developing certain GI disorders, including celiac disease and various food sensitivities, and allergic reactions that can cause symptoms of GERD. You might try eliminating certain foods and later re-introducing them or see if you can get tested for allergens as well as gliadin and tissue transglutaminase enzymes for gluten sensitivity and a vitamin B12/folic acid level.
