Welcome to The Q&A with Elaine Moore. Stopping Birth Control Pills

Hi Elaine:

I hope all is well!

Just a quick recap:

I have Graves', and had RAI in July of 2008. Started replacement with Levothroid in October 2008. I am also on birth control pills and have been for the last 15 years (I have never stopped taking them).

My husband and I are thinking about having children in the next year, and I want to stop taking the pill. I know that an adjustment in my levothroid dose will probably occur, but I am deathly terrified of going hyper again.

Any advice on stopping the pill and not going hyper?

Hi Danielle,

You'll probably need slightly less replacement hormone when you get off the pill although if you're on one of the low estrogen pills, any changes shouldn't result in hyperthyroidism. After you've been off the pill for 4-6 weeks, have your labs tested. Any changes in your dose should be based on your FT4 level. Best, Elaine
