THE Q & A

Welcome to The Q&A with Elaine Moore. Registered members are invited to ask any question of Elaine Moore on autoimmune diseases, Graves' disease, other thyroid diseases and subconditions, laboratory work, traditional and complementary medicine, triggers and environmental influences, thyroid and immune disorders in pets and animals, and other relevant areas of inquiry.

New labs

Hello Elaine,

Just wanted to run this by you. Labs on 2-15-2010 TSH was 25.394, Free T3 was 3.4, Free T4 was 0.77. This was on Thyroid USP of 1 Grain. Doctor raised Thyroid meds to 11/2 grain on 2-22-2010. In the mean time on 3-1-2010 I had an appt scheduled at my regular primary care physcian and he did blood work for cholesterol etc and I did not even realize until I returned for results today that he had ordered also a TSH & Free T4. My TSH was 3.451 And my Free T4 was 1.11. Isn't that pretty fast of a change on my TSH? What do you make of that?

Hi Elaine,

The change in TSH and FT4 are about what you'd expect in a week after increasing your dose by 50%. In another 4 weeks your FT4 should be slightly higher and TSH will be somewhat lower. I don't think this dose will be too high because you see the primary effects in your FT4 level in about a week.

The pituitary gland watches closely over your levels. With your FT4 moving out of the hypothyroid range, the pituitary quickly slows down on TSH secretion. Your FT4 will soon be stable and in a few more weeks TSH will be stable too and it'll reflect your thyroid status. Best, Elaine
