Hi there,
Today I was diagnosed with Graves disease and notified that I was hepatitis c positive, needless to say both a surprise. I have been prescribed Tapazole 5mg, and have some questions and concerns as I am new to these new medical conditions in my life.
Could someone give me some advise on how to manage these conditions, alternative approaches and things to watch out for? I am overwhelmed after researching these conditions and would greatly appreciate any advise!

Hi Juell,
About 30% of people who test positive for hepatitis C never go on to develop chronic liver disease. Since you're not mentioning elevated liver enzymes or jaundice, it's likely that you're in this group. Your doctor will probably do some phenotype testing to tell what strain of hepatitis C you have. Some types are more likely to have progressive disease and may need treatment. It's important to protect your liver by avoiding alcohol. In addition there are herbs like milk thistle that help protect the liver. I wrote a book on hepatitis that explains hepatitis in general and thoroughly explains hepatitis C. You might see if your library has it or Amazon has a used copy.
Your Graves' disease is probably mild since your doctor is starting you on a low dose of Tapazole. It's always a good idea to use the lowest dose needed of any drug you take, including Tylenol, to help protect the liver.
You might want to avoid environmental triggers such as excess dietary iodine, cigarette smoke, and stress. A nutrient-rich diet and antioxidant vitamins are helpful for both conditions. Best, Elaine

Hi Juel,
About 30% of people with hepatitis C don't go on to develop a chronic liver condition. This has to do with the genetic strain of the virus and your own genetic profile. Since you didn't mention elevated liver enzymes or jaundice, you may not treatment although your doctor will want to regularly run follow-up tests.
Milk thistle herb is helpful for protecting the liver. Avoiding alcohol and drugs is also helpful and so is a nutrient-rich diet and supplements like liver-care. My book Hepatitis, Causes, Treatment, and Resources describes hepatitis in great detail and has several chapters on hepatitis C. You might want to see if your library has it or Amazon has a used copy. Interferon is sometimes used for hep C, but it can worsen and sometimes trigger new autoimmune conditions.
It's a good idea to start out with a low dose of Tapazole, like your 5 mg dose, to help protect your liver. Avoiding environmental triggers such as excess dietary iodine in processed foods will also help move things along. Antioxidant vitamins and stress reduction techniques can help with both conditions. Best, Elaine
