Hi Elaine,

How are you doing? I just have a few questions. I have been off of methimazole since May of this year and off of Levoxyl since June of this year, and am feeling fabulous! I was getting little hyper and hypo fluctuations, but have noticed that they seem to be getting less frequent, and I just feel great. My last lab tests were done at the end of July and I had FT4 and TSH within normal ranges. My hair has really perked up, and so have I. I have started feeling like running again, and even taught my nieces how to do cartwheels the other day. I am 34, but can still do a pretty good cartwheel, LOL! My equilibrium problems seem to have resolved. I guess I am just feeling awesome and normal.

How long would it take for a person to start feeling poorly again off of medicines? My endo won't take a TSI% test, so I don't know where my antibody levels are, so I am not sure if I am in remission or not. I have never been off of medicines, before, so this is my first test of remission, and I guess I'm just wondering how long it would take for someone to start feeling ucky if they were not in remission and they went off medicine?

I have noticed that when I eat a lot of goiterogens now, that I don't feel quite as well anymore, so I have started limiting them. I used to center my diet on them, but now I feel better when I don't eat as much of them. i am still limiting my Iodine as well. Other than having to change my diet a bit, I feel great. I feel normal. My neck is still small, and my eyes and skin are still doing good.

How long does remission last? Is it just individual or is there an average amount of time for most people?

Thank you,

Hannah

Hi Hannah,

TSI suppress or lower the TSH level. So it's generally considered that if you're on a very low (or no) ATD dose and are secreting TSH normally, then you're in remission. Several studies show that this is a good way to predict remission and I agree. Ideally, your TSH now would be between 0.3 and 1.0, which is what most normal adults run.

Goitrogens can cause hypothyroidism in normal people especially in the summer when goitrogens are so abundant. You'll want to make an effort to avoid eating too many. Congratulations on achieving remission, Elaine
