Hi, I am wondering if the lab made a mistake in my test results. I was prescribed 5 mg methimazole for 6 weeks. The Free T4 is exactly the same as it was 6 weeks ago before I took medication. Is it possible there would be no change if the dose was too low. The result was 2.7 and range 0.8-1.7. Thanks.

5 mg is a very low dose of methimazole. the usual starting dose is 20 mg and at that dose, the FT4 returns to the normal range in 6-8 weeks. I don't think it's a lab error but an inadequate dose. Lower doses are used when FT4 is only slightly elevated, but with your level, a 20 mg dose would be recommended. best, elaine
