Vitamin D Supplementation Corrects Thrombocytopenia Purpura

By Elaine Moore on 5/10/2012

In a recent published study, researchers treated a woman with idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP) and a low 25OH vitamin D level with supplemental vitamin D. The 2,000 IU vitamin D increased her platelet level. However, she stopped taking vitamin D when a neighbor told her it was toxic. After her doctors increased her vitamin D dose, her platelet level rose into the normal or reference range.

The researchers remark that evidence suggests that many of the 160 known autoimmune diseases are associated with vitamin D deficiency.

I have ITP and just recently have become aware of the developing body knowledge regarding vitamin D and AI disease. Two other papers on the subject of ITP and vitamin D are found at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23815922 and at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3623781/ .
