A study of 57 children published in the Nov 2008 Journal of Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism found that 43 percent of children with Graves' disease had negative TSI test results. However, it's unclear if the researchers from the Riley Hospital for Children were using the typical cutoff of 130% activity as their cutoff. If so, these finding could be due to interpretive error.
The TSI test is often interpreted by physicians as negative if results are lower than 130% activity although some labs interpret results higher than 90% as presumptive, and results in patients without autoimmune thyroid disorders are in the range of <2% activity.
