It's long been known that hyperthyroidism may cause an array of psychological and emotional symptoms. Common symptoms include mood disturbances and irritability although in some cases symptoms of paranoia and psychosis can occur. A sudden drop in thyroid levels has been known to cause major psychological symptoms. Lowering thyroid hormone levels gradually (the usual protocol using anti-thyroid drugs) helps and so does avoiding hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is often accompanied by new symptoms including depression and anxiety.
Karen Olender Kipnis is a psychotherapist in Santa Monica, CA specializing in the emotional aspect of thyroid disorders. In her brochure, she explains her services and welcomes patients with questions to contact her for more information. While emotional symptoms generally resolve when thyroid hormone levels are restored to their optimal levels, therapy is sometimes needed.
